The majority of the Greek shipbuilding industry is situated in the region known as ‘Perama Zone’ that extends from the northern limits of the Port of Piraeus as far as Elefsina Bay. Already in severe crisis because of competition with low labor cost countries, the high exchange value of the euro and an ageing workforce, the consequences of Greece’s economic meltdown for Perama’s spipyards were devastating.
